How Gear Oil Works?

The transmission, transfer cases, differentials and gear boxes in cars and trucks contain a series of gears and bearings. These keep moving and come into contact with each other while converting the torque into power and transferring it to through the drive shaft to the axles. The gears intertwine every time the clutch engages and disengages as the vehicle changes acceleration.

In short, there is a lot of rolling, sliding, grinding and other violent action going on in the shafts and gears. This is bound to generate a lot of heat and friction which will cause untold wear and tear on the teeth and other metal surfaces until they finally destroy each other.

Lubrication is essential to both promote easy movement and control the increase in temperature. And this is where gear oil enters the picture.

As the name goes, gear oil is specifically designed to protect the gear sets and keep them working cohesively and efficiently. It has a higher viscosity than regular engine oil which allows it to stick to the moving parts and keep them lubricated properly. The oil forms a film on the various metal surfaces and keeps them apart while they work together to deliver optimum power output and keep the vehicle running smoothly. For certain applications, the gear oil is fortified with extreme pressure (EP) and anti-wear additives to deliver increased protection.

Gear oils do not come into contact with the gases, acids and other pollutants like engine oil. Therefore, they can last much longer and have an extended change interval. However, the gear oil is also bound to get contaminated with moisture and debris which can discolor the oil or make it more viscous. As the gear oil breaks down, the increased friction can cause difficulty in engaging gears and damage the components as well. Left unchecked, it can entail a costly overhaul.

Therefore, regular checks and changing the gear oil based on the manufacturer’s recommendation is crucial.

There are a variety of gear oils in the market and in general, synthetic gear oils deliver greater resistance to shear breakdown than mineral oils. Gear oils are further classified by the American Petroleum Institute using GL ratings ranging from GL1 to GL5. The higher the oil’s GL rating the greater pressure it can sustain and vice versa. Most modern gearboxes use a GL-4 oil while separate differentials require a GL-5 oil as it contains more EP additives that lower the coefficient of friction.

Royal Purple Gear Oil, Max Gear is carefully engineered for use in truck, motor home/RV, and automotive front or rear differentials, manual transmissions and lower gear units of marine engines that specify use of an API GL-5 or GL-4 fluid. The high quality synthetic oil is further fortified with Royal Purple's proprietary Synslide additive technology that makes it outperform other GL-5 synthetic oils in terms of lower friction, decreased operating temperature, excellent corrosion protection, maximum horsepower, suppressed oil-water emulsion and prolonged gear and bearing life.

How can you find if you have the Best Oil Filter for Your Car?

There are many customers, many of whom have been using cars for years now, but doesn’t have a proper understanding of why a car oil filter is important.  Most of them are acquainted with the importance of quality oil there’s little idea about the oil and oil filter functionalities.

Poor quality oil filters can shorten the life of your engine and result in the failure of the other parts as well.  Even though it forms a little part in the car’s lubrication system, regular change in the quality oil protects the engine from premature wear.

Tiny metal bits chip off as the engine runs for a longer time and when they are allowed to re-circulate through the oil, can erode the other parts of the engine.  When you have a quality oil filter like the Royal purple oil filters, it prevents the erosion from taking place.  The unclean oil is passed through the filter sieving the coarse particles and prevent any abrasion that would have otherwise damaged the engine.

Why you need a high quality oil filter?

The internal construction and quality of the filter impacts the longevity of the engine. If you are choosing Royal purple oil filters, the forerunners of the oil filter technology, you can automatically see a wide change in the performance of your vehicle. Be it passenger cars, buses, trucks or other off-road vehicles , choosing the right oil filter is mandatory.

Did you know why filtration efficiency is important?

While talking about the importance of oil filter in your car, you should have a brief idea about  filtration efficiency or particle size retention which is one of the basic standards in determining the quality of an oil filter.  Particle size retention measures how well a filter can hold the abrasive particles.  The ones with the optimum filtration efficiency can trap particles larger than 25 microns (to put into perspective, a human hair measures about 70 microns in diameter)!

Dirt-holding capacity

As the term suggests, this is another measure for the oil filters that marks the amount of contaminants that can be ejected until the filter stops working.  The capacity of Royal purple oil filters is way more than any other regular oil filter but it still requires regular oil change for maintaining better performance by the engine.

Royal Purple Synthetic Motor Oil & Lubricants are widely used in vivid segments such as automotive, motorcycle, marine, industrial, and racing applications. It is considered as one of premium synthetic motor oil and Lucky7Trucks.com is one of the largest independent stocking distributors of Royal Purple Products. Octane Booster for Road Going Vehicles – Yes or No?

I drive a basic stock road going vehicle. The engine performance is good. The drive is smooth and fuel efficiency is attractive. However, it lacks the power I am looking for. My quest for increased power and enhanced engine performance led me to Royal Purple Max – boost octane booster. This additive is capable of boosting the octane rating, thereby, enhancing the engine performance and power. Adding this high performance additive can make my vehicle run like a sports car, as it is popularly used in racing and sports vehicles. However, the mixed opinions about using an additive in usual road going vehicles perplexed me. So, I consulted an expert.

Here’s what I learnt.

The octane number of the fuel or additive is indicative of whether or not it can be used in high performance machines. Since, racing and sports cars have high performance engines; they require fuel or additive of a higher octane number. High octane rating fuel burns better and cleaner. They are cleaner; thanks to the extensive process of refining they go through.

Manufacturers recommend a minimum octane rating for vehicles. Using fuel or additive with an octane rating lower than the recommended damages the engine, causes knocks and irregular ignition. So, high performance vehicles require fuel or additive with higher octane rating. So, Royal Purple Max – boost Octane booster is the best for sports and racing cars.

Using fuel or additive with a high octane rating does not make a difference in regular road vehicles. The best you can expect is a slight improvement in the combustion process and elimination of some carbon build-up. However, as octane fuel and boosters are expensive, why shell out extra bucks, when not needed.

Use them for high performance engines.

Should You Switch To A Longer Oil Filter?

Vehicle owners are always advised to strictly abide by the manufacturer’s recommendations when choosing an oil filter, and for good reason. For instance, there are numerous offerings of Royal Purple oil filters that actually look identical. However, the internal specifications of filter media, flow rate or bypass valve rating vary a lot and are designed to suit specific applications.

Now while the factory-fitted and subsequently recommended filters are quite tiny in size, it is noted that longer oil filters are also available in the aftermarket. Many people are tempted to try the larger filters thinking that it will offer an increased oil capacity along with greater filtration media area. The assumption is that this will translate into better flow of filtered oil and also increase the life of the oil filter. What’s more, they may also find a larger filter that perfectly fits the threads of their engine.

So does this mean that they can safely use the oversized oil filter and reap the benefits therefrom?

Well, the specs of the larger oil filter may not match the requirements of your vehicle and this can affect the performance and life of the vehicle. Even if you happen to find a larger oil filter with the exact same specifications, the increased length may not provide the adequate ground clearance and will only make it susceptible to damage from road debris. Moreover, using the wrong filter can also void the warranty from the filter company in case of defects or damage to the engine.

To top it all, the extra oil or filtration capacity offered by longer filters may not actually be needed by your vehicle at all. so, is it worth risking the functioning of your vehicle over a redundant benefit? Better stick to the manufacturer recommendations and choose the right Royal Purple oil filters when it is due for a change.
